Every year room 2, my class of course, does heart dissections on Valentine's Day. I get the hearts from a local rancher. The Oliver Family also has donated various hearts for comparison. This year I had a turkey heart, buffalo heart, and a coyote heart. We dissected lamb hearts.
My wonderful parent volunteers show up ready to don rubbler gloves and cut away. It is one of the highlights of first grade!! I do it on the same day as our Valentine's party because it is not first grade curriculum so I make it a Valentine's Day activity :)
This day is also the schoolwide Pajama Day. I let the class bring blankies, stuffed animals, and pillows. They would spend the whole day on the floor on their blankets if I allowed it :)
So...basically this day is spent in Pajamas, on the floor, at their seats dissecting hearts, passing out Valentines, and eating treats. The class did really well with a fruit bar, dipping sauces, and little bottled waters.
It was a lot of fun but I am wiped out right now!!!!
